create / consume
An experimental film exploring the nature of the relationship between the artist and the viewer.
synopsis
an exploration of the nature of consumption and creation between the artist and the viewer, posing the question "what is being created?" through a series of intercut vignettes.
director’s statement
this film was made because i wanted to try and understand the nature of the relationship between the viewer and the creator. i believe that, as much as the artist creates art to be consumed, the viewer also creates the artist by simply existing. the existence of the viewer demands creation, demands something to entertain and satiate. that demand creates the artist, who then creates the art for the viewer, and the cycle continues.
The actual presentation went through many different iterations, both because of changing concept and changes in what I could practically accomplish. What started as a dream to build a contained, interactive viewing experience became a film projected behind a door - and the choice of the viewer to open the door.
When I first approached create / consume, I knew I wanted it to be a piece about the relationship between the audience and the creator- or, more specifically, how I rationalize the fact that I, as a creator, don’t know who I’m creating for. Three fabricated settings each represented a different kind of pressure: internal, personal external, and public external.
