director’s statement
Sorry About Your Dead Brother is a dry, bleak comedy with just a few moments of real emotion and vulnerability- something I am not incredibly practiced at as a director or writer. To bring this whole thing together- from draft 1 to final film- in 15 weeks was an incredible challenge, but despite that, the heart of the film shines through, and gave me the opportunity to begin to develop my style- visually and linguistically.
On a technical level, having a character you can see through entirely was also a challenge. Post-production became the driving force of our production- a territory I was not at all familiar with. With the help of my incredible editor and compositor, Seth Robinson, I gained such an appreciation and knowledge of the VFX pipeline, as we considered every asset we would need and made sure to get it while on set.
The goal for this film was to challenge myself, both creatively and technically. I had never written or directed a comedy before, and there was a very steep learning curve involved with this film the whole way through. Despite my struggling though, I was able to push myself and learn from my very talented collaborators, so even if the final film isn’t exactly what I had envisioned, I did still accomplish my goal to step outside my comfort zone, and I’m proud of that.
